“I don’t see the desert as barren at all; I see it as full and ripe. It doesn’t need to be flattered with rain. It certainly needs rain, but it does with what it has, and creates amazing beauty.”
Joy Harjo

At the end of a 21 year relationship (17 of those married), I found myself in an emotional desert. Devoid of tears, or feelings, I simply allowed myself to be. A bit brusque, with a dry and biting sense of humor. Often too bright during the waking hours, to make up for the bitterly cold nights alone. However, in the middle of my emotional desert, I learned who I truly was. I found my strengths, and my weaknesses. I found beauty within a drought of my own making. And then, amazingly, I found love. Love for myself. For my gifts and my situation. And while I had been giving love all along, it was only when I learned to love myself that I was able to see that I was worthy of love in return.
