Everything was closed.

The noise of the city was muted here, buffered out by an unseen sound wall. If you ventured down this alley during the day for 1 Black, 2 Creams from the Coffee Bar, you’d only hear the hum of the neon lights, and the chatter of the others standing in line. But tonight, there was no line. The alley was dark and quiet, except for the light tinkling of little metal links, followed by a loud zipping sound, as a space portal opened. The zipping was followed by a flash of light, and then the portal spit out its contents.

The light of the portal closing had barely winked out before the disoriented couple were standing back to back, weapons raised, ready to face whatever might come crawling out of the dark.

“Where are we?” he asked.

Glancing around, expecting the worst, she muttered “Well, I don’t know, it’s not like I had time to punch in coordinates before we had to get out of there.”

Glancing over his shoulder, he offered her a sardonic smile. “It could be worse…”

“Yes,” she smiled sweetly, “we could be handcuffed together. Oh, wait…” she lifted their arms. “We are.”

Sander knew from the moment the plans started going awry that she was going to be cranky. But he also knew, if he let her wallow in that crankiness they would never finish their mission.

Mahogany sat down on the curb, frustration sounding in the deep sigh she released. Lifting her hand to rub the back of her neck, she muttered, “I fucking hate this. I really really do.”

Tugging on her hand, Sander smiled as she looked up at him. “Hey, it’s going to be okay. We just need to take a moment and regroup.”

His smile and encouraging words were not enough to completely change her attitude at the moment, but it was just a gentle reminder that so long as they worked together, things would be ok.
